HCI International 2023, the 25th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, was held from 23 to 28 July 2023 under the auspices of 21 distinguished international boards of 505 Members from 61 Countries. The conference took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, as a ‘hybrid’ event. The first three days of the conference (23-25 July) comprised virtual only parallel sessions for paper presentations with remote only participation and ‘in-person’ only tutorials and workshops. The Opening Plenary Session (25 July) and the parallel sessions that took place 26-28 July run as hybrid events (i.e. allowing both 'in-person' and remote participation options for presenters and participants).
This year, the impressive number of 2,807 individuals (1,539 virtual and 1,268 in person) from 77 countries registered to participate in this truly international in scope event, where the work of world leaders in the field was presented.
The conference program included:
Sara Kiesler, University Professor and Hillman Professor Emerita of Computer Science and Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon University, and a program director of the National Science Foundation, joined us as the keynote speaker at the Opening Plenary Session. Her keynote entitled: "Research Challenges to Humanizing Cyberspace" was also her acceptance speech for the HCII 2023 award ‘HCI Medal for Societal Impact’.
Prof. Gavriel Salvendy (Major Professor to 68 PhD students) held a Mentoring Session for PhD students with the following important topics: Development of a high impact PhD Dissertation and its effective dissemination; Transition from a PhD student to industry professional; and Transition from a PhD student to successful Faculty.
The ‘HCII Design Café’, a new interactive satellite event coordinated by Christine Riedmann-Streitz, was held ‘in-person’ for the first time during the HCII2023 conference. The focus of the HCII Design Café was on two major challenges:
The 47-volumes Conference Proceedings are published by Springer in the LNCS, LNAI and CCIS series, and available on-line through the SpringerLink Digital Library, readily accessible by subscribing libraries. In keeping with the established tradition, HCII 2023 also offered the option of “Late Breaking Work”, both for papers and posters, with the corresponding 9 volumes of the proceedings, currently under preparation, to be published in autumn 2023 in the Springer LNCS and CCIS series. All 56 volumes together will form the full set of the HCII 2023 Conference Proceedings, indexed by a number of services, including: CPCI, part of Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science; Scopus; EI Engineering Index; ACM Digital Library; Google Scholar; DBLP, etc.
Springer also offers for sale on demand all volumes, individually and as a full set (after completion), in soft cover, with a significant discount for authors.

We would like to thank each and every one of the Conference participants for their valuable contribution towards the success of this Conference.
As established in previous years, twenty-two awards were conferred during the Opening Plenary Session. The awards, in the form of a plaque and a certificate, were presented to the author(s) of the Best Paper of each Thematic Area / Affiliated Conference and of the Best Poster.
In the context of the HCII 2023 Student Design Competition, a seven-member international committee, acting as the jury to select three award winners, evaluated accepted submissions. The three awards were conferred during the Opening Plenary Session along with three prizes, the GOLD received the prize of $1,000 USD, the SILVER of $500 USD and the BRONZE of $250 USD. All accepted submissions were presented during the conference.
The HCII Conference has established a long-term collaboration with the World Usability Initiative (WUI), founded and directed by Elizabeth Rosenzweig. The 2022 World Usability Initiative (WUI) Design Challenge with theme "User-Soaked Design" award winners were announced on World Usability Day, 10 November 2022. The Design Challenge Awards (Gold $1,250; Silver $1,000; and Bronze $750), sponsored by the HCII2023 Conference, were conferred during the Opening Plenary Session.
HCI International 2024, the 26th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, jointly with the affiliated Conferences, under the auspices of 21 distinguished international boards, to be held under one management and one registration, will take place at the Washington Hilton Hotel, Washington DC, USA, 29 June - 4 July 2024.
You are invited to participate and contribute, through papers, posters, tutorials, workshops and student designs to this major international forum for the dissemination and exchange of up-to-date scientific information on theoretical and applied areas of HCI.
Additionally, the Conference has a long-established tradition of inviting distinguished scientists and professionals in the broader HCI field to organize parallel sessions. Prospective authors should submit their proposal upon invitation from a session organizer. The process is open until 2 February 2024 (under the guidance of Parallel Session Organizers).
You may wish to download the Call for Participation in PDF format.
Mark in your calendar the following important deadlines:
The best contributions will be awarded! The best paper of each of the HCII 2024 Thematic Areas / Affiliated Conferences will be given an award. The best poster extended abstract (in the form of a short research paper) will also receive an award.
Workshops, to be organized as hybrid events, are intended to foster discussion and exchange of ideas on hot topics in the broader field of HCI. Proposals for creative formats are encouraged, where the benefits for workshop participants would need to be indicated. Workshop participation is complimentary for all registered Conference participants. Detailed information about the organization of Workshops will be announced through the Conference website in due course.
The Student Design Competition gives to College and University students of all grades an opportunity to present their design idea, by submitting an abstract and a video clip (up to 5-minutes). Three awards will be selected by an international jury (GOLD - $1,000; SILVER - $500; and BRONZE - $250).
